For years furniture has been manufactured using wood. However, with the rise of the industrial revolution came a revolution in how furniture is made, with the introduction of materials such as steel, aluminium, glass and plastic. Despite the fast rate at which new materials have appeared in the past century wood maintains its own and is still, undeniably, a staple material within the furniture industry. The main focus of wood as a manufacturing material within the furniture industry is its strength and durability. Wood furniture requires very little maintenance and yet is extremely resilient to rigorous use. It is easy to maintain and easily cleaned using a damp cloth and occasionally with wood cleaner. It is also high quality and good value as each piece is crafted to a high standard and is unique. Alongside its durability, strength and ease of maintenance, wood has also gained popularity due to its ability to be modified. With sanding, staining and painting a wooden table can be refinished and given an entirely new look whilst still maintaining its original properties such as strength.
