A Temporary Cafe with an Interesting Design Property developers Cathedral Group, who are in charge of the redevelopment of Greenwich Industrial site, have called upon the expertise of designer Moraq Myerscough to create a temporary cafe in the area until the official plans for the redevelopment begin after Christmas.
The site, that is located near the Greenwich DLR station, is to be redeveloped into a mixed-use scheme of flats, business units and retail called The Movement. Before building work takes place the cafe will occupy part of the site. The cafe has not been designed in the traditional way, and if you like vibrant colours and interesting typography, then this is the cafe for you. This temporary cafe complete with outdoor cafe furniture for the outside dining area design was not a solo effort from Moraq Myerscough. Myerscough enlisted the help of poet and author Lemn Sissay who has also been commissioned by Cathedral Group to write a poem, which has been titled Shipping Good, which, when the area is completed, will be permanently set in the road that cuts through the site. Currently the poem runs along a hoarding in the temporary space.
Using one of Myerscough's previous works, he created signage in vibrant colours that were hand painted and fixed to the scaffolding that forms the main structure of the cafe. The original poem reads: This is the House. This is the Path. This is the Gate. This is the Opening. This is the Morning. This is a Person Passing. This is Eye Contact. Not only this but these words were also used in some other soft furnishings for the cafe, for example cushions that were to be used on the outdoor cafe stools and throughout the other outdoor seating area. The cafe seating itself was designed by Myerscough and Luke Morgan (from Supergroup) using reclaimed laboratory stools.
