Our Top 3 Halloween Recipe Picks

October 28th 2022

With summer festivals over for 2022 and the nights drawing in again, it’s time to celebrate Halloween. It’s believed that Halloween originates way back to the 4th century from both Christian and Pagan beliefs although, some believe that it is solely a Christian holiday while others believe it commemorates the Roman festival of the dead.

Whatever our beliefs, there is one thing is for sure and that is, Halloween celebrations in more recent years have been all about trick or treat, ghosts and ghouls, witches, bats, spiders and anything that’s generally considered to be a bit on the nasty side, with the exception of pumpkins of course!

Pumpkins originate from North America and are traditionally carved into jack-o'-lanterns during the Halloween period. Pumpkins are rich in vitamins and are widely grown for food. Here we take a look at our top three favorite pumpkin recipes and add some interesting pumpkin facts!

Pumpkin Soup:

Pumpkin soup is enjoyed by many of us at this time of the year, especially during Halloween parties and gatherings. It should be creamy in texture and has a distinctive sweet yet nutty flavor. It doesn't need to be difficult or time-consuming to make. This BBC's good food, pumpkin soup recipe explains how.

Interesting Fact 1:

Pumpkin soup was part of the diet of prisoners in North Vietnamese prison camps during the war.

Pumpkin Pancakes:

Perfect pumpkin pancakes should be light and fluffy. They are a great way of adding interest to Halloween gatherings. Sticking with easy and quick and not comprising on fluffiness we have chosen this recipe by Inspired Taste.

Interesting Fact 2:

Pumpkins are packed with vitamins and minerals including vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin C, vitamin E, iron, copper and potassium, however, some of these will disappear during the pancake cooking process.

Pumpkin Pie:

Pumpkin pie is often eaten during the autumn and early winter. It's important that 'pie pumpkins' are used because they are smaller in size and so have a fuller, sweeter flavor than the larger ornamental pumpkins that are generally used to make pumpkin soup and jack-o'-lanterns. Pumpkin pie isn't quick to make but, we feel it's worth the wait! This BBC Food, pumpkin pie recipe is our choice.

Interesting Fact 3:

Early American colonists made pumpkin pies that were savory and similar, in taste, to pumpkin soup and not the sweet pies that we enjoy today.
