DF Mexico Comes To Tottenham Court Road

News September 14th 2015

Titled after the Mexican name for the country’s capital, the Distrito Federal, DF Mexico’s new 130 cover diner will serve dishes which are all inspired by the way in which US and Mexican cuisine influence each other.

DF Mexico originally began as an experiment after Wahaca founders, Thomasina Miers and Mark Selby, concluded a road trip which spanned both the US and Mexico.

Thinking of heading down? Expect the likes of carne con chili crinkle cut fries, referred to by the DF team as ‘next level nachos’ (my kind of dish) 'NYC Torta' a Mexican burger served New York style in a toasted brioche bun with smashed avocado and the ultimate Mexican-American steak tacos, made with grilled steak, crispy cheese, chipotle salsa and tomatillo guacamole, served diner-fast in soft tortillas.

Co-creator Miers, who formerly lived in Mexico, said: “Tottenham Court Road is an exciting area as it’s in the middle of everything; creative businesses, universities, hospitals, theatres, libraries, courts, you name it".

“When we first launched DF Mexico we were nervous about doing something that was a ‘fusion’, but this food reflects the reality of big cities – a melting pot of influences that can come together to make something great.”

To reflect Mexico City’s growing design scene, the new diner will highlight and support this imaginative scene by showcasing 46 original pieces from young contemporary artists, including original painting, limited edition silkscreen prints, woodcuts, posters and mixed media. Artists include Le Super Demon who, inspired by traditional Mexican Loteria cards, has produced a special series of 6 paintings on wood.

Softroom Architecture and Design have fashioned an interior which creates the feel and energy of modern Distrito Federal, Mexico.

If you are in the Tottenham court area this coming Thursday, why not head down and check out the new diner for yourself. If you do, let us know your thoughts and keep a special eye out for the folding blue chairs which have been supplied by Café Reality.

Sombreros are optional!
